Who we are

Welcome to The Cozy Spectrum.

If you are reading this, chances are you are exhausted. You might be drowning in an alphabet soup of special needs acronyms, staring blankly at a Katie Beckett waiver application, or just feeling like the only parent in the world navigating a rare diagnosis.

Take a deep breath. You’re not alone.

I’m Breanna, and I am so glad you are here. First and foremost, I am a special needs mom. I know the grief, the joy, the isolation, and the fierce love that comes with this journey. I also know how impossibly hard it is to find practical answers when you are running on empty.

That is exactly why I created this space.

As a special needs parent and a proud member of COPAA (Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates), I built this community to be the resource I desperately needed in the beginning. Here, you will find a safe place to land, parent-to-parent advice you can actually use, and the expert advocacy tools you need to fight for your child.

What You Will Find Here:

  • The Community Blog: Honest, unfiltered advice on coping with a rare disability, celebrating the inchstones, and finding joy in the chaos.

  • Advocacy & Waiver Help: Step-by-step guidance on navigating IEPs, securing your Katie Beckett waiver, and understanding your child’s educational rights without needing a law degree.

  • Home Safety & Adaptive Gear: Real-world recommendations for special needs baby-proofing, safety beds, and products that actually work to keep your kids safe and make your life easier.

  • The Disability Glossary: A cheat sheet to help you decode the overwhelming lingo and acronyms of the medical and special education worlds.

Grab a cup of coffee (or let’s be honest, reheat it for the third time today), look around, and stay a while. Whether you need help modifying your home, preparing for an IEP meeting, or just need to hear someone say, "Me too," you are in the right place.

What is Katie Beckett Medicaid?

Navigating a new diagnosis is overwhelming enough without stressing over medical bills. If you assume you make too much money to qualify for state help, you need to know about Katie Beckett Medicaid (also called the TEFRA Waiver).

The Game-Changing Loophole Normally, Medicaid requires a family to meet strict, low-income limits. But under the Katie Beckett waiver, the state completely ignores the parents’ income and assets. They only look at the child's income.

Since kids don't have paychecks, their income is essentially zero. This incredible rule allows middle- and higher-income families to access life-saving Medicaid coverage for a child with severe disabilities or complex medical needs.

Why It Matters Katie Beckett acts as a financial shield, often working as a secondary policy alongside your private insurance. It covers the massive gaps, ensuring you don't have to drain your life savings to afford the therapies, specialized equipment, or in-home care your child deserves.

Early Intervention: Babies Can’t Wait (Birth to Age 3)

If you’ve just noticed your child is missing milestones, Georgia’s Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) program should be your very first call. For our family, BCW was the absolute foundation, providing the early speech, occupational, and physical therapies Josh needed.

The most important piece of advice? Don't wait for a "perfect" diagnosis to call them. Early intervention is the most powerful tool you have.

What You Need to Know:

  • The Evaluation is Free: You do not have to pay a dime for the initial multidisciplinary evaluation to see if your child qualifies.

  • Income Isn't a Barrier: BCW serves children regardless of family income. Eligibility is based entirely on your child's developmental delays or medical conditions, not your paycheck.
